Paul Nakamura
Patient/Survivor
I am a retired engineer and manager, having retired in 2012 after 45 years in electronics, microelectronics and satellite systems. The last 5 years of my retirement has been a roller coaster ride with many ups and downs. ZERO has been instrumental in keeping me mostly in the ups.
A ZERO Prostate Cancer advocate and a prostate cancer warrior who was diagnosed in 2020 with Stage 4 cancer, Gleason 9 and mets to bones and outside my prostate and bladder. To say this was "unexpected and a big shock" is an understatement. Over the last 5 years I’ve gone through many treatments including ADT and extensive radiation sessions. When my cancer became resistant to my treatments in late 2024, I had one chemo infusion and then started Pluvicto treatments. I was fortunate to be selected for a clinical trial at UCLA for Pluvicto, Flexible MRT (control group). I have completed 3 of 6 infusions. So far, my results have been excellent with SpectCT scans showing >90% reduction in tumor size and no new tumors. That’s my path so far on my journey with this unrelenting disease.

Ernie Johnson, Jr. is one of sports’ most respected and loved personalities. He is an eight-time Sports Emmy Award-winning sportscaster for Warner Bros. Discovery’s TNT Sports. He is the host of TNT’s NBA coverage on the multi-Emmy Award-winning “Inside the NBA” studio show with analysts Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, and Shaquille O’Neal. Maybe more impressive than his professional fame and recognition is Ernie's innate ability to connect with people on a human level. While Johnson has experienced a myriad of professional successes, his biggest passion lies with one thing – his family. Driven by appreciating the ”Blackberry Moments” in life, a term Johnson coined from a memory of playing baseball as a kid, he is reminded to embrace the unexpected, unscripted moments that take place away from offices, conference calls and e-mails. There have been sweet, unscripted Blackberry Moments for Johnson – memories with his wife and children and seemingly mundane moments that have a lasting effect. There have also been unscripted Blackberry Moments with some thorns –the loss of loved family members and his personal battle with cancer. But throughout all of them, Johnson is thankful for what his Blackberry Moments have taught him. In his book, UNSCRIPTED: THE UNPREDICTABLE MOMENTSTHAT MAKE LIFE EXTRAORDINARY, Ernie takes readers behind the scenes of those very moments. “We’re all so focused on sticking to the script from one day to the next, one meeting to the next, one sales call to the next, that we blow right by the unscripted moments that can profoundly impact not just our lives but also the lives of those with whom we share the planet, the workplace, or a home, ”Johnson said. “If there’s one thing life has taught me, it’s not to fear the unscripted but to embrace it.”

He is also co-host of The Steam Room podcast and a host for Turner Sports and CBS's NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship coverage as well as play-by-play announcer for TBS’ exclusive coverage of Major League Baseball and the PGA Championship. Previously, Johnson has covered the National Football League, the British Open, Wimbledon and the Olympics. In addition to his professional accolades and lifetime achievement awards, Ernie has earned honors recognizing his incredible actions off- camera, including the first-ever John Wooden Keys to Life Award and a Musial Award, both of which salute characteristics such as integrity, faith, and good sportsmanship. He is also a Georgia Sports Hall of Fame inductee. In December 2023, Ernie was inducted into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame and will be inducted into the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame in July 2025.
